Now that we have
setup our model and skeleton, its time to bring live to it.
You should download my skeleton since this tutorial will be based on it.
To download click “SAVE TARGET” otherwise UOL wont let you download it.

In this tutorial I
will show you how to make a simple walk animation using 3D STUDIO MAX R4.2
with CHARACTER STUDIO 3.21A.
I recommend you going through comet-cartoons tutorial about animating
principles (link at the bottom of the page)
Now let’s begin!
The first thing to do, is to think about how you want your animation to
look like when it is finished and will be used.
Lets say this walk is for a game. If it is for a game it must loop at the
end, must be small, detailed and must be scary when running after you.
Lets begin by setting the number of frames. I will use 24 at 30 FPS for
now. Right click on TIME CONFIGURATION at the
bottom right of the screen next to the play button.
now on time configuration set the LENGTH to 24 and then click OK.

Now we are ready to
start the animation.
Go to the LEFT view, press W to maximize the view, select the whole
skeleton and click on set key frame just like the picture below.

1 click SET KEY
FRAME for the whole body
2 click on BODY HORIZONTAL and then SET KEY FRAME
3 click on BODY VERTICAL and then SET KEY FRAME
4 click on BODY ROTATION and then SET KEY FRAME
When you do the whole skeleton will be deselected but the COM of it.
Click on ANIMATE button or press N.
Go to frame 6, move
the GREEN LEG back and the BLUE LEG forward like this:

then go to frame 12
and move the GREEN LEG and BLUE LEG to the middle like this:

on frame 18, GREEN
LEG forward and BLUE leg backwards.

Now for the last
frame, go to the first frame, select both legs, the click COPY POSTURE, go
to the last frame and then click PASTE POSTURE.
Don’t forget to move the BLUE LEG up a bit on the FIRST and LAST frame of
your animation.
You should see something like this when you hit play:
