How to setup a BIPED in 3DS MAX

Hello.

In this tutorial I'll show you how to work with Character Studio’s BIPED.
In this tutorial I’ll use 3D Studio Max R4 but it can be used in all other versions of 3D Studio Max with Character Studio.

The first thing to do is load the model you want to work with.
this is the model I'll be working:

Now you have to make a BIPED for your model.
Click on CREATE menu , SYSTEM , BIPED .
Go to front view and click on the middle of the feet and drag up to the size of your model.

Now you should see the BIPED inside the model. Click on it and then go to the ANIMATIONS menu. Select FIGURE MODE .
Now you should be able to edit the BIPED to make it fit inside the model.
From this:

To this:

OK. we have to SCALE the BIPED to fit in the model. make sure you're in FIGURE MODE before touching the BIPED.

First lets place the BIP01 (the COM of the biped) in the model's pelvis.

Now go to FRONT VIEW and place the BIP01 on the right place. Sometimes you have to scale the pelvis to fit the legs on the right place. After that its time to start fitting the legs. select the leg and rotate it until you think its a good position.

We have to do this using the ROTATE and SCALE tools .
After you're done with the leg, its time to MIRROR it to the other leg.
Click on the leg you've just edited, click on COPY POSTURE. just like on this image:

Now you should have BOTH legs perfectly fit inside your model! isn't 3D Studio Max great!?

Now go up to the SPINE. It is one of the body parts that you can move away from the BIP01. they are:
"Bip01 Spine" "Bip01 R Clavicle" "Bip01 L Clavicle" "Bip01 Tail01" fingers, ponytail and toes.

OK now click on the "bip01 Spine" and move it around to fit the back of your model (if you are using a HUMANOID this shouldn't be necessary).

After the SPINE, you can move on to the CLAVICLE, just like the legs, you can mirror it to the other side.
Now its time to assign each vertices to the biped you've just set.
